Examining this data in another fashion demonstrates that a limited number of
labs participated in the PAT program (or analyzed for quartz) prior to 1974. As
emphasis on both control of quartz exposure and need for proficiency testing
increased, so did participation in the program. As noted by the chart, the
number of participants peaked near Round 85, and use of the colorimetric
procedure seems to have also dropped from about 30 to 15 labs near the same time
frame.
