Quartz PAT - Trends in Methodology

How popular are these methods? One can use data from the American Industrial Hygiene Association/NIOSH Proficiency Analytical Testing (PAT) Program database. The PAT program is used to gauge the relative analytical capabilities of a large number of laboratories for specific substances. The Program has been creating and distributing analytical samples, and compiling/analyzing data for quartz for approximately 25 years. Shown on the graph is the historical transition from 100% of the labs analyzing samples using the colorimetric procedure early on to the present day where the majority of samples are analyzed by XRD. Other indicates some labs continue to use AA, petrographic, or other technique to analyze for quartz. Note that Rounds 1 through 30 were conducted prior to 1974.
