Samples for quartz particle counting are taken by use of a sampling pump and an
impinger containing 95% ethanol or isopropanol/water. This collection technique
was only recently disbanded; it was required by OSHA regulation for determining
compliance to quartz exposures in the construction industry. Results were
reported out as millions of particles of quartz per cubic foot of air. Problems
associated with impinger breakage, spillage, flammable nature of the collection
solutions, and inability to provide the analysis on a rapid basis helped to
diminish use and a change in the regulation.
