Microscopy

The petrographic technique requires a microscope and extensive sampler preparation. The technique is very subjective, the human eye is essentially the detector; however, the technique is also extremely sensitive and again, requires a well-trained analyst. Detection limits of approximately one part per million are possible. Because of the subjective nature, this technique is best suited for use to positively identify quartz only.
