Title: Trees that side scar easily Type: Text and Image Slide Content: 1. In standard felling, the sides of the hinge between the notch and the back cut are not sawn when the tree starts to fall. 2. As the tree falls, there is strain on the sides of the tree along the dotted lines. (circled area) 3. Instead of breaking with the hinge, strips along the side of the tree rip off the stump, resulting in side scars. 4. To prevent side scarring, corner to a depth of one inch before making the back cut. [Image 1 of side view of tree cut with a conventional notch, the hinge is not cut.] [Image 2 of side view of tree falling with dotted circle indicating area of strain in the hinge] [Image 3 of side view of stump with side scars] [Image 4 of top view of tree showing cross-hatched notch (with "notch" labelled in center) and two shallow corners labelled on each side: shallow cornering approx. 1" deep and shallow cornering approx. 1" deep, notch approx. 1/3 dia. of tree] |
