| Control Measures – Abrasive Blasting |

The following control
measures have been used to minimize exposure to silica in workplace operations involving
abrasive blasting: |

- Barriers, Enclosures
Enclosed areas are commonly used to prevent exposure to others in the
work area and minimize exposures to employees involved in abrasive blasting. The American
Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Ventilation Manual recommends two
types of enclosures, depending of the space requirements of the operations:
- Improved Ventilation
- Personal Protection for Abrasive
Blasting
Only two types of respirators can be used
for personal protection when performing abrasive blasting with materials containing silica
(either as the blasting material or on the surface being treated). For non-silica
materials, four types of respirators can be used.
In addition to respiratory protection, sandblasters should be protected
from other hazards associated with the work environment.
The OSHA ventilation
standard (1910.94) contains
specific requirements for Abrasive Blasting operations. |
