X-ray Diffraction (XRD)
XRD image The most common method of analyzing crystalline silica is based on the diffraction of X-rays off the repeating layers of atoms in the crystalline structure. XRD is the most general but most expensive method. Because alternate analytical peaks are available, XRD is the method used by OSHA at the Salt Lake Technical Center (compliance) and at the Wisconsin State Lab (consultation). It is also used by MSHA for Metal and Non-metal Mining samples.

Analytical methods developed by recognized authorities provide a basis for individual laboratory procedures. A summary of and access to recognized sampling and analytical methods is provided.
