The electric power and steam supplied to the vessel must be properly designed and installed.
Steam Supply
Potential Hazards:

Worker injuries can be caused by accidental releases of steam and steam explosions.

Requirements and Example Solutions:
  • The safe working pressure of the vessel's steam system must be determined. [1915.93(a)(1)]
  • Appropriate pressure gauges and relief valves must be installed to maintain the proper pressure of the steam system. [1915.93(a)(1)]
  • Steam hoses and fittings must have a safety factor of no less than five (5). [1915.93(a)(2)]
  • Steam hoses must be safely hung, shielded against accidental contact, and protected from damage. [1915.93(a)(3) and (4)]

Electric Power
Potential Hazards:

Worker injuries may include electrical shock and burns from electric power supplied to the vessel.

Requirements and Example Solutions:

When electrical power is from outside sources the following precautions must be taken: [1915.93(b)(1)]
  • If in dry dock, the vessel must be adequately grounded.
  • All circuits to be energized must be equipped with adequate overcurrent protection.
