Scaffolds  » Independent Pole Wood Scaffolds
 
An independent pole wood scaffold is a supported scaffold consisting of a platform(s) resting on cross beams (bearers) supported by ledgers and uprights independent of support (except ties, guys, braces) from any structure.

Note: Newer methods of ship construction have greatly reduced the use of these scaffolds. [1915.71(c)]

Requirements and Example Solutions
  • All pole uprights must be set plumb and rest on an adequate foundation. [1915.71(c)(1)]
  • Light duty scaffolds must not be more than 24 feet in height: [1915.71(c)(2)]
  • When poles are spliced, they must be in accordance with 1915.71(c)(3).
  • Ledgers (such as stringer) must be leveled, secured, and adjusted as work progresses. [1915.71(c)(4)]
  • Bearers must extend beyond the ledgers. [1915.71(c)(5)]
  • Diagonal bracing must be provided. [1915.71(c)(6)]
  • Minimum dimensions and spacing of members must be in accordance with 1915.71(c)(7).
