Hot Work » Hot Work Operations and Maintaining Safe Conditions

Hot work operations include job set-up and placement, inspection and testing of equipment, as well as actual performance of the hot work.

During hot work operations, conditions can change. Welding and cutting gases may leak into the space, piping may leak, the vessel may shift causing changing conditions, or different types of work (painting or cleaning) may be conducted in adjacent spaces. Therefore, maintaining safe conditions requires constant precautions, including frequent inspection and tests performed by the Shipyard Competent Person (SCP).

Note: During shipbuilding operations, the need for testing by a SCP and CMC will depend on the progress of the vessel construction. Until there is a potential for a hazard, such as after the introduction of flammable liquids, testing may not be required.

Note: Confined space entry is one of the leading hazards associated with barge cleaning. Review the Shipbuilding: Confined/Enclosed Spaces and Other Dangerous Atmospheres chapter for information on how to protect workers from this hazard. Also review the hot work requirements found in 1915.51, 1915.55, 1915.56 and 1915 Subpart P.

Specific work practices are required for hot work. The majority of the requirements for hot work are discussed in the enclosed space section. Additional requirements for hot work in confined spaces and in other locations are listed in those sections.
