Mechanical Operations:
First Aid

Logging operations are often remote from any emergency medical care. Properly administered first aid can be a major factor in minimizing even life-threatening injuries. OSHA requirements address first aid training and access to first aid equipment.

Highlights of First Aid Requirements

All employees, including supervisors, must be certified as trained in first aid and CPR. The minimum content of the training is specified in Appendix B of the Logging Standard. [29 CFR 1910.266(i)(7)(i) and (ii)]
First Aid kits are required at each work site where trees are being cut, at each active landing, and on each employee transport vehicle. [29 CFR 1910.266(d)(2)(i)]
The number of first aid kits and the content of each kit must reflect the degree of isolation, the number of employees, and the hazards reasonably anticipated at the work site. [29 CFR 1910.266(d)(2)(i)]
The minimum required contents of a first aid kit are provided by Appendix A of the Logging Standard. [29 CFR 1910.266(d)(2)(ii)]
Personnel responding to accidents may be exposed to bloodborne diseases. This hazard is addressed in the example s afety and health program section.
In addition to the First Aid Requirements, personnel must be made aware of the potential and first aid for insect bites and stings, and the hazards of insect and tick borne diseases. [29 CFR 1910.266(i)(3)(iv)]
