FLOODING Hurricane Charley is over but the dangers are not-and that's why it's important to remember that clean- up and recovery work under these conditions can be extremely hazardous. Flooding conditions can make this work even more treacherous. Flooding can cause the disruption of water purification and sewage disposal systems, and sites dislodgement of hazardous materials stored above ground. This can cause sickness in workers and others who come in contact with contaminated floodwater. In addition, flooded areas may contain electrical or fire hazards connected with downed power lines. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises workers to take all proper safety and health precautions to avoid injury.
